This photograph features a reservoir sluice gate near my home in Aragón — a piece of rural infrastructure that most people pass without a second glance. I’m drawn to these utilitarian structures: built solely for function, yet undeniably sculptural when isolated and viewed with intention. Their stark geometry and imposing presence reveal a quiet, understated beauty.

To create the smooth, atmospheric look in this image, I used a long exposure, softening the water and stretching the clouds into clean, flowing lines. The contrast between this gentle movement and the weight of the concrete gives the scene its tension and sense of stillness.

The composition emphasises strong vertical lines, deep shadows, and the play of mid-morning light across the structure. In black and white, the focus shifts entirely to form, texture, and tone — highlighting the monumental, architectural quality of the subject.
